taxonweb 2011

Every year, like many of us, I get a new gift from our Belgian government … this year they included a small extra one :)

Both on my Mac (loaded with Snow Leopard) and Linux Box (loaded with Ubuntu Natty Narwhal) I bumped into the following problem:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to ccff02.minfin.fgov.be.

Renegotiation is not allowed on this SSL socket.

(Error code: ssl_error_renegotiation_not_allowed)

The page you are trying to view can not be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site.

The solution is simple …

— step 1 —

open an extra tab in Firefox and enter: “about:config” in the address bar

— step 2 —

promise to be careful!!!

— step 3 —

enter this string in the filter field:

“security.ssl.allow_unrestricted_renego_

everywhere__temporarily_available_pref”

(remove the quotes and make sure no other characters are added, it should be one string)

— step 4 —

select the search result (one line) and double-click it until the “Value” field jumps from false to true

— step 5 —

restart firefox

— step 6 —

make sure your eID middleware is started, your ID card is inserted, the eID Firefox extension is installed and trust settings are enabled on root certificate …

— step 7 —

go to taxonweb and try to login again

— step 8 —

win?

I’m not sure why this information isn’t included in the instructions provided on the taxonweb. It makes me wonder how good this procedure was tested …

Googling for “ssl_error_renegotiation_not_allowed” directed me to this page: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/744718 which included the solution.

Enjoy!
