Today's header slides are a view of the east end of Glen Coe taking in the distinctive peak of Buachaille Etive Mor; and the magnificent Broch of Gurness on Orkney's West Mainland, built as a defensive settlement before 200BC.

In Focus

Emigrants Statue Standing in Couper Park above the south side of the River Helmsdale and overlooking the village of Helmsdale and its harbour is the Emigrants Statue. The statue provides a focus for the commemoration of the huge numbers of people evicted from their ancestral homes during the Highland Clearances, in an area where the impact of the clearances on the society and the landscape was both profound and irreversible. 3 June 1726: The birth in Edinburgh of James Hutton, considered by many to be the father of modern geology.

3 June 1774: The birth in Paisley of Robert Tannahill, a silk weaver by trade, and a self-taught poet and musician who went on to become known as the Weaver Poet.

3 June 1863: The birth in Inveraray of Neil Munro, the journalist and author best remembered as the creator the the fictional Clyde puffer Vital Spark and her captain, Para Handy.
