Newport Bermuda Race 2024

On-Line Race starts Friday 21st June at 1705 UTC

Sailonline is honored and delighted to once again be the partner for the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee ( BROC – made up of the Cruising Club of America and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club ) running of the famous Newport Bermuda Race. So, if you cannot make it out onto the real water for this epic event, here is your chance to compete with both real and online sailors in virtual reality on sailonline.org. Also if you’re sitting on your sofa, rather than draped over the rail of your owner’s yacht, take a moment to view the Starting Line Live Show that will stream on youtube.

The very first Bermuda Race was held in 1906 when the general view was that it would be insane for amateur sailors to race offshore in boats under 80 feet. Thomas Fleming Day, editor of ‘The Rudder’ magazine, vehemently disagreed, insisting, “The danger of the sea for generations has been preached by the ignorant.” Certain that an ocean race would be enjoyable and safe, and would also develop better sailors and better boats, the Newport Bermuda Race was born.

Since 1906, more than 50,000 men and women of all ages and 5,000 yachts have sailed in this unique race that is known and respected worldwide as “The Thrash to the Onion Patch”. Also, the race takes some credit for the formation of the Fastnet Race, for accelerating the career of famed designer Olin Stephens and for the development of new rating rules.

One of the unique features of Sailonline is the ability to run different yacht polars in the same race, and as the Bermuda Race has traditionally been conducted in four major divisions, we will be doing the same in this year’s virtual Newport Bermuda 2024.

Participants can choose one of the following when registering for the online race:

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division
Judel Vrolijk 62

St. Davids Lighthouse Division
Santa Cruz 52

Finisterre Cruising Division
Riptide 50

Double-Handed Division
Jeanneau Sun Fast 3600

For more information about each yacht and a view of their polar diagrams, please click on a yacht type name.

Sailonline's virtual Bermuda Race will open for pre-race practice on Friday 14th June at 2300 UTC.

Report

Commentary

From all over the World, 84 First 36.7 yachts reported on the online line for the first of SOL's two buddy-up races with the Lake Ontario Offshore Racing Association, well-matched by 70 real-life yachts on Lake Ontario proper, including eight further/actual First 36.7s.

Online the first Firsts to finish got round the 75nm triangular course in just under 16 hours, well-beaten as it turned out by the eight real-lifers, the first of whom recorded an elapsed time of 13:26:43 hours. Looks like it must have been breezier than forecast!

How it all went blow-by-blow, or should that be puff-by-puff, you can read in Satori's thorough report under the maple leaf above. Suffice here to report that WRmirekd from Poland took the virtual gun by a mere 8 seconds from South Africa's Patrick70119. Always close is our racing online!

Commentary

Relatively stable weather conditions meant that the victory and the place at the finish were determined by precise navigation and the search for even minor course corrections that would give an advantage over the opponent. Some minor problems were caused by the Serpent Island chicane on the first leg from the start to Odessa. Fierce duels in various positions continued until the very end.

Ultimately, ita10267 turned out to be unrivaled, ahead of WRmirekd by 70 seconds and the third bonkhoot by 95 seconds. Sax747 finished fourth. An exciting fight for fifth place took place between rafa (P5) and Vida_Maldita (P6). Congratulations to the winners and we consider the race to be successful and interesting.

Commentary

Our second race of our virtual California Race Week was of course and had-to-be the iconic SoCal 300. This was already the 9th time we were honoured to be the online buddy of the event's organising clubs - the Encinal Yacht Club, St Francis Yacht Club, Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, Santa Barbara Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club. Online, exactly 99 boats showed on the line for the start off Santa Barbara at the in-confusion mis-set time of 1300UTC, when alas the real-life racers as well as a few sleepy SOLers were still fast asleep. Sorry about that!

Despite the untimely start, once through the Santa Cruz Channel and out at sea, conditions were very similar to what our Super Maxi tri's had encountered in the 500 a week earlier, as reflected on by the eventually 2nd and 3rd place finishers, Zorba777 the Greek and Satori the Canuck, in their excellent, well-illustrated reports under the brown bears above.

This time, it was our well-known Polish virtual skipper WRmirekd who was able to find that 'perfect balance between V-max and D-sailed' by 'holding out at sea (the right bit) and deciding when to gybe (the right point) for the shore and the finish off San Diego' to take the gun by just under a minute from his two nearest pursuers. Another multinational podium, well done all!

The Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta celebrates and promotes women's sailing in Australia. Comprising a week of intense racing on Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay, the event has grown to become Australia’s premier women’s regatta and one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, and over the past several years, Sailonline has been delighted to have been invited to offer all-comers (women and men) a virtual opportunity to race the Bay during AWKR week. This year, it’s an imaginary 80-miler in Sun Fast 3300s, which should prove a proper online challenge.
