Recorded in the living room of the duo's home, the low-key glow that results brings the music even closer to its source. Bits of folk, jazz, pop, and country intermingle as the singing and songwriting husband-and-wife partnership of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler let the sparkling, yet subtle melodies of these ten originals--plus a lovely cover of "My Funny Valentine"--dictate the sparse instrumentation and languid but never haphazard tempos.

This is music of delicate beauty, tinged with regret, sadness, and hope, yet devoid of pretense. It sounds like these songs fell out of the sky, drifting through the clouds and arriving with help from Bergquist's exquisite voice. Her double-tracked vocals dart through tinkling piano lines on "Born," making the already exquisite song shimmer. Stand-up bass and occasional cello and sax along with a dash of percussion bolster these chamber-styled ballads that float like lilies on a pond. Four months ago I had never heard of Over the Rhine. I have three of their CDs now, and can't make myself pull them from the changer in my car's glove box. One reason is the sheer power of Karin Bergquist's voice, which she commands like a musical instrument, vamping as well as any female vocalist out there. Instrumentation and arrangement [and engineering] are spot-on, the lyrics are genuinely interesting, and the various musical genres are represented with flawless originality . Buy this CD if you like Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Jennifer Knapp, Daughter Darling, etc. You'll never regret the purchase unless you can't stand depth in your music. This music surprised me with its soul and sound. My friend saw the band in concert and told me how they talked about coming to the table with a bottle of wine and two glasses and working out some things in their marriage and working out this album. Now maybe that is not exactly the story, but it was a great story and i bought the CD. Every time I play the music....at parties, in the background, in class...people always stop mid-sentence and say, Who is singing? GET THIS CD. AT LEAST ONE COPY. It is one of those CDs you can give to a friend and be certain they love it.

This is the first "Over the Rhine," cd I've heard, and it's a pleasant surprise. The genres are mixed, and you get a little country, a little Kurt Weil cabaret, a little folk, some jazzy sort of pop, and a lot of music. It's a collection that got me in its cumulative effect. The first track had me wondering if I hadn't made a mistake, and if the disc wasn't going to put me right to sleep. Well, I didn't nod off, and the disc grew on me. It's a mellow listen, with good musicianship and lyrics, and well worth the purchase.

Great vocals, good to great lyrics, but the music needs help

Karin is a great vocalist and I do enjoy the lyrics in this album and their prior efforts. However, unless they look elsewhere for someone to write the music to their songs, they are destined to have a just a small cult following. The music to most of their songs falls into the pleasant-but-generic category and often the only thing that lifts the songs out of mediocrity is Karin's voice. Not everyone is a jack of all trades. Linford and Karin are a musician and a vocalist respectively and they should accept the fact that they need to outsource the song writing duties. Sorry for being so harsh.

Nun bin ich offensichtlich der einzige, der nicht schon alleine bei der Erwähnung des Namens `Over the Rhine' Rad und Purzelbäume der Begeisterung schlägt. Alles was an Kritiken existiert, ist dermaßen begeisterungstrunken, dass scheinbar in Verbindung mit diesem Namen jedes distanzierte Urteilsvermögen abhanden kommt. Denn was bekommt man wirklich zu hören? Piano- und stimmbasierten Folk mit einem Hauch von Jazzfeeling. Das Ganze hin und wieder ergänzt durch eine verhalten gespielte A-, E- oder Steel-Gitarre und ein einmalig vorkommendes, sehr jazzballadesque aufgesetztes Saxophon in "Little did I know". Gegen Ende wird's mit Drums dann auch ein wenig folkrockiger.
Doch ausgerechnet die Jazztracks stellen die Höhepunkte der Gesamtaufnahme dar. Da ist zum einen der Abschluss der CD, einer der Standards des gesungenen Jazz' schlecht - "Funny Valentine", fast schon ein Cliché unter den Jazzsongs, man denke nur an die Version von Chet Baker....und die 3754 anderen. Und da ist das bereits angeführte "Little did I know", das direkt einer Cooljazz-Quartet-Aufnahme eines Lee Konitz entstammen könnte.
Insgesamt beackern Over the Rhine "Grenz"-Land aus allem Möglichen. Das tun sie allerdings ziemlich gut - wohlgemerkt, sie tun dies als Folk-Duo mit Bandunterstüzung, nicht als Cooljazz-Remake.

In diesem Genre des Grenzgängerischen, dass sie mit dieser Aufnahme durchaus kompetent vertreten, ist es nun allerdings so, dass sie sich eben auch in hochvirtuos besetztes Jazzgelände wagen. Und nehmen wir an dieser Stelle die bereits zitierte Chet Baker Aufnahme, deren - und vor allem dessen - Intensität erreichen sie nicht! Sollte man tatsächlich ein Anspruchslevel festlegen, dann liegt dies irgendwo bei einer folkigen Ausgabe von Tuck & Patty - immerhin. Dabei spricht für Over the Rhine, dass ihr Piano-Stimme-Jazz-Kammer-Folk weitestgehend kompetent selbst komponiert und ausgezeichnet produziert ist. Zu letzterem trägt übrigens David Henry am wundervoll singenden, damit einer zweiten Stimme gleichenden, Cello bei, das annähernd jeden zweiten Song abrundet.
Für Over the Rhine spricht zudem die eigentlich nicht sonderlich wandlungsfähige Stimme ihrer Sängerin, zwar einerseits mädchenhaft, andererseits aber auch rauh hauchend. Das mag paradox klingen, aber sie phrasiert tatsächlich selbst komplizierte Melodiebögen zwischen Folk und Jazz sehr sicher. Zusammen, im Zusammenspiel der Kerneinheit aus Piano und Stimme, trifft das den Ton ziemlich gut, erzeugt eine dunkle romantische Tönung und Stimmung.

Ach ja, die expliziten Einschränkungen, die gibt's neben den bereits formulierten impliziten, tatsächlich: man nehme sich nur die gespielten Piano Figuren vor - das hat wenig mit Jazzstandard zu tun. Nun mögen die Freiheitsgrade, oder besser Unabhängigkeitsgrade, im Folk höher sein als im Jazz, aber das was Over the Rhine hier praktizieren findet ansonsten eher in Filmmusiken oder in Ambient-Musik ihren Niederschlag: sehr an der Romantik orientierte, dabei reduzierte repetative Strukturen von nicht allzu hohen Komlexitätsgraden. Das kann man stimmungsvoll finden - für Folkies und Esoterikladenbetreiber gilt dies vermutlich. Das kann man aber auch einfach nicht allzu anspruchsvoll nennen....nennen wir es mal so.

Die Americana- Band Over the Rhine ging 1989 aus der Rockband Servant hervor. Zunächst begann man als Quartett, acht Jahre später schrumpfte man zum Duo mit Begleitband. Karin Bergquist und Linford Detweiler leben als Ehepaar, wenn sie nicht gerade auf Tour oder im Studio sind, in einem alten Farmhaus in Ohio.

Das opulente 2003er- "Ohio"- Doppelalbum hatte fantastische Rezensionen erhalten und eine ausgedehnte Tour nach sich gezogen. Für den Nachfolger "Drunkard's Prayer" zogen Karin und Linford dann die Reißleine vom Studio- und Tourstress, um sich neu auf ihre Vision von Ehe und Zusammenleben zu besinnen. Folgerichtig entstand das neue Album im ehelichen Wohnhaus. Instrumente und Aufnahmegeräte wurden dort platziert, Mitmusiker dorthin eingeladen. So wurde "Drunkard's Prayer" zum persönlichsten, entspanntesten und ruhigsten Album der Bandgeschichte.

Das Songwriting ist mindestens ebenso tiefgründig und vielschichtig wie immer, nur diesmal mit dem Schwerpunkt Liebe und Beziehung. Die Fallen Kitsch und Schmalz werden glücklicherweise gekonnt umschifft. Die Instrumentalarbeit ist äußerst dezent, bei zwei Songs erklingt zu Bergquists Stimme nur ein Piano. "Born" ist für mich der beste Song - ein unfassbar emotionales kleines Meisterwerk. Der Titelsong "Drunkard's Prayer" steht dem nur wenig nach. Später finde ich die CD leider streckenweise etwas zu dahinplätschernd. Natürlich darf man das anders empfinden, dennoch kann ich ganz subjektiv diesmal nur vier Sterne vergeben.
