Congratulations to the @owensartgallery, recipient of the Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell Literacy Award in the category of Community Literacy Program!

“It’s such an honour for the Owens... It recognizes the important, but perhaps unexpected, work that museums do in fostering literacy, particularly museum and visual literacies.”

The Owens Art Gallery offers a diverse range of education and outreach programs — including school activities, projects for schoolchildren, seniors, college, and community initiatives. These programs emphasize visual and museum literacy within the context of social space and community building.
Mount Allison students have returned from the 2024 Kyoto Field School in Religious Studies!

Led by Dr. Susie Andrews, this is the second year the two-week accessible, for-credit field school has been held in Japan — with funding by @gso.ecm.

Famous for its temples and shrines, gardens, and palaces (including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites), Kyoto served as Japan’s capital from its 8th-century founding to the mid-19th century. From the thousands of vermilion torii arches at the Fushim Inari Shrine to the whisks and tea caddy used in the tea ceremony, Kyoto was the ideal place to pursue the course question: what role does material culture play in religious practice and belief?

In addition to learning in Kyoto, students journeyed to Nara, Osaka, and nearby communities by train.
